Trichology

We offer a range of trichology services at The London Skin and Hair Clinic for people experiencing hair loss or scalp conditions. Our dermatology team includes specialists in hair and scalp disorders who provide detailed diagnosis and evidence-based treatment for a wide range of hair loss conditions.

Patients seeking a trichologist in London can arrange a trichology consultation to investigate the underlying causes of hair loss and discuss appropriate treatment options.

At the clinic we provide treatments for itchy or scaly scalps and can advise on camouflage products that help improve the appearance of thinning hair. Our dermatology nurse and Consultant Dermatologists offer intralesional steroid injections for treating patches of alopecia areata, and we are also one of the few dermatology clinics offering PRP treatment for hair loss.

What is Trichology?

Trichology is the science of the function, diagnosis and treatment of hair and scalp conditions.

At The London Skin and Hair Clinic, Consultant Dermatologists with expertise in hair loss and scalp disorders assess patients to identify the underlying medical causes of hair thinning or hair loss and recommend appropriate treatment.

Trichology services may also include scalp therapies, advice on hair care and treatments designed to support healthy hair growth and improve the appearance of thinning hair.

What is involved in Trichology?

During a consultation with a Consultant Dermatologist specialising in hair-loss and scalp conditions you will have a detailed assessment and scalp examination to help identify the causes of your hair loss. They will explain how healthy hair functions, what causes hair loss, and answer any questions or concerns you may have. A baseline set of clinical photographs will be taken using the Canfield stereotactic system, the global standard for clinical hair photography in order to monitor and measure your hair growth.

The Consultant Dermatologist will discuss all the possible treatment options with you and the results you should expect. All treatment options are backed by clinical evidence. We do not offer fad or so called ‘miracle treatments’.

We also offer scalp treatments including scalp descaling, and treatments to calm sensitive and inflamed scalps.

Following your trichology consultation London patients receive an individualised treatment plan tailored to their specific hair loss or scalp condition.

What aftercare is required for Trichology?

We recommend a yearly review for repeat photographs and clinical assessment to monitor progress and address any concerns.

Follow-up appointments at our London trichology clinic allow the dermatologist to review hair growth progress and adjust treatment if required.

What is the cost of Trichology?

A new hair-loss or scalp consultation with a specialist Consultant Dermatologist is £360 and lasts for around 30 minutes. A review consultation is £225.

We also offer review appointments for patients of the clinic who have been diagnosed with male androgenetic alopecia with one of our Dermatology Assistants at a charge of £80.

The cost of trichology treatment will depend on the diagnosis and treatment plan recommended following your consultation.

Is there any preparation needed before having Trichology?

We recommend that you do not wash your hair for at least 48 hours before your consultation.

It is better to leave your hair loose and not braided or styled, and without hair care products (such as fibres or styling products) in place.

You should bring along details to your appointment of what hair care products you use, what supplements or medication you are on and if you have had blood tests or pathology results in the last 2 years, that is also helpful to bring to your appointment. We have a detailed medical questionnaire we will ask you to complete before your appointment.
