What is skin surgery?
Skin surgery refers to a range of minor surgical procedures performed by a dermatologist to remove or sample areas of skin under local anaesthetic. These procedures may be used to diagnose skin conditions, remove abnormal or symptomatic tissue, or treat certain dermatological problems.
Where tissue is removed, it is often sent to a specialist laboratory so it can be examined under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.
Skin surgery may be performed to remove suspicious, changing or symptomatic skin lesions, or where a biopsy is required to determine the nature of a skin condition.

What is involved in Skin Surgery?
Local anaesthetic is injected into the area to numb the involved skin and the Dermatologist removes a skin from the affected area using a precise surgical punch, scalpel, curette or blade, depending on the location and nature of the lesion.
Skin lesion removal is usually carried out as a minor outpatient procedure performed by a dermatologist using local anaesthetic.
What are the risks or potential side effects of Skin Surgery?
Bruising may occur. Whenever the skin is cut a scar will result.
Some patients may also experience temporary redness, swelling or mild discomfort around the treated area as the skin heals. These effects are usually short-term and settle as the wound recovers.
Your dermatologist will explain the expected healing process and provide advice on wound care to help minimise the risk of complications and support optimal healing.
What aftercare is required for Skin Surgery?
A dressing will be applied to keep in place for 24 to 48 hours. Heavy exercise and alcohol should be avoided. Normally patients can return to work following a procedure.
Follow-up appointments at our London dermatology clinic allow your dermatologist to review healing and discuss laboratory results where tissue has been analysed.
